A friend recently received a phone cal from a party introducing themselves as a representative of a computer maintenance firm. This individual told our friend that they had purchased a maintenance contract from a company that had since gone out of business. And that our friend was due a $200.00 refund. All that was needed was banking information so that the money could be immediately deposited.
After the information was passed on the caller gasped saying, “Oh my gosh, I made a terrible mistake. I’m going to get fired”. I entered $2000.00 instead of $200.00 and it’s headed to your bank.”
“What can we do” my friend asked. “Thank you so much” replied the caller. “If we hurry we can replace the money. Go to your (retail store) and get $2000.00 in gift cards and overnight them.”
When purchasing the gift cards the retail clerk asked why was our friend purchasing such a large amount in gift cards.
Upon hearing this tale the clerk told our friend “this was a scam.” Saving our friend $2000.00
